Stormwater wetlands are designed to capture runoff and reduce flooding, but they can also provide habitat for native freshwater fish, birds, and aquatic invertebrates. Whether fish should be encouraged entry into stormwater wetlands depends on how heavily polluted the incoming water is, whether the wetland will dry out, and whether there is any existing aquatic habitat upstream. Regardless, in many urban landscapes these sorts of wetlands provide some of the only open water habitat available for fish species, such as the īnanga shown.
